Stethoscope, a clinical instrument utilized in tuning in to sounds created inside the body, predominantly in the heart or lungs. It was imagined by the French doctor R.T.H. Laënnec, who in 1819 portrayed the utilization of a punctured wooden chamber to send sounds from the patient's chest (Greek: stēthos) to the doctor's ear.
